About Me
Dead of Antietam
Civil War Photos
Mathew Brady

"My greatest aim has been to advance the art (of photography) and to make it what I think I have, a great and truthful medium of History."
                     - Mathew Brady -

Mathew Brady was a famous photographer from the Civil War era.  Brady’s photos of the Civil War are an example of Social Description.  They show a particular event in America’s history.  “The Dead of Antietam” is a perfect example of this.  The series of photos is of the corpses from America’s costliest battle ever.  Brady’s images can also be classified under Political and Ideological Expression.  Brady felt as if it were his duty to capture America’s history on photo.  This is evident in these quotes:

“From the first, I regarded myself as under obligation to my country to preserve the faces of its historic men and mothers.”

- Mathew Brady -

and

“I had to go.  A spirit in my feet said ‘Go,’ and I went.”

- Mathew Brady -

The reason I chose these functions is that I am kind of a history buff.  I especially like history of wars.  Images of history (the ones I chose) fell into the Social Description and Political and Ideological Expression categories.
